Offshore-Deep Sea Fishing

Offshore wreck and Reef Fishing

Deep Sea fishing trips, or offshore fishing, here in coastal Georgia offers a unique experience for anglers of all ages and skill levels. The offshore waters surrounding Saint Simons Island, Sea Island, Jekyll Island, and Cumberland Island offer year round action from the near shore wrecks all the way out to the warm waters of the Gulfstream.

With miles of relatively shallow waters, the bottom off of coastal Georgia is littered with wrecks, artificial reefs, and live bottom creating ideal habitat for a wide array of offshore and migratory species. Targeted species will vary throughout different times of the year and some species have certain seasons that they are available for harvest.

Target Species

The near shore reefs off of St. Simons Island, Sea Island, and Jekyll Island are home to Black Sea Bass, Summer Trout (weakfish), Bull Redfish, Sheepshead, Spadefish, Cobia, Barracuda, and King and Spanish Mackerel. Travel offshore a bit further and add Gag and Scamp Grouper, Amberjack, Red Snapper, and Triggerfish to the menu. The Live bottom in the 40 mile range can be the true bounty of our waters with all the above species a possibility on one of these fishing trips. In addition, Porgies, Beeliners (Vermillion Snapper), Red Grouper, a host of other bottom species as well as pelagic species are often caught as well.

Gulfstream (no longer offered)

Gulfstream fishing out of Saint Simons Island and Jekyll Island is also very productive. Trolling current rips, humps, and edges in the western edge of the Gulfstream produces Wahoo, Mahi-Mahi, large Blackfin Tuna, Sailfish, as well as the occasional Blue Marlin. When conditions allow, bottom fishing the “Ledge” can produce trophy catches as well. In addition to a wide variety of minimally pressured fishing, an offshore trip is always an adventure. Departing from Jekyll Island or St. Simons Island early in the day you will round the bend and the vast Atlantic awaits you.

The Run Out

Dolphins usually greet you early on, along with various species of Sea Turtles and rays. In the winter and early spring, don’t be surprised to encounter one of the many Northern Right Whales that spend this time of year nursing their calves in our coastal waters. Occasionally Jaws himself may make an appearance in the cooler months, as these Great White Sharks are annual visitors to Coastal Georgia as well. Giant Manta rays migrate by in the spring months and at up to twenty feet across they truly are a sight to see.
