Late December Georgia Report
Late December was a great time to be on the water. Mild temps, sunny skies, light winds and great fishing made for some big smiles. Keith Calhoun was one of the anglers who took advantage and ended up catching 11 nice redfish on fly in just a little over an hour. James Allen Cone at 11 amazes me every time we fish together. He cast a fly rod like he was born with one in his hand. His brother Stephen at 14 is the same way. Stephen has concord bonefish, redfish, and snook on fly but James Allen had yet to land his first saltwater fish on fly. He has caught 35 inch snook and redfish over 13 pounds on spinning tackle and rainbow, brown, and brook trout on fly back home in North Carolina where their dad Steve has spent lots of time with the boys fishing. When they come down to fish in St. Simons Steve lets his boys on the bow and he take a back seat with his camera and great advice. After 2 days of tough conditions do to a front that moved through which drove us far back into the creeks in search of trout and redfish they decided to stay and fish Friday morning. We met at 6:30 am and it paid off. Stephen got the bow first. It didn’t take long and Steven landed his redfsih on fly. We had a tough time finding out what the fish were eating but once we did they ate. As the tide turned to come in the schools started to break up and James Allen had his work cut out. As we headed to the far end of the flat we moved in on a few fish that were working the grass line with there backs out of the water. We blew the first few fish out and then it happened. A fish moved in with his back and tail out of the water James Allen made a great cast and 2 strips later the fish slammed the fly. It was a tough fish taking us 100+ feet into the backing more than one time. After several attempts to elude capture we landed the fish. A huge 8 pound bruiser. James Allen was shaking and the smile was from ear to ear. Look for the video soon. I will post a link. Tight lines and enjoy every day like there no more.
